OPEN CALLArchives, Cinema and Collective Healing: Preserving Memory Through Film

HYBRID ACADEMIC CONFERENCEUNATC „I.L. Caragiale” Bucharest, Str. Tudor Arghezi 3-b and online, via Zoom
April 4, 2025

Creatrix Fama and “I.L. Caragiale” National University of Theatre and Film (UNATC) invite doctoral candidates, researchers, and practitioners to engage in a global dialogue on the intersection of cinema, memory, and collective healing. This conference explores how film, through its relationship with visual archives and cultural heritage, can serve as an essential medium for the representation, processing and understanding of historical and social trauma.

Cinema’s unique ability to reflect on painful yet transformative societal experiences position it as a vital tool for preserving collective memory and fostering reconciliation. Through storytelling—whether in documentaries, narrative films, animation, or experimental works—it invites audiences to confront their shared histories, engage in meaningful reflection, and envision pathways toward healing.

We encourage submissions of original research, case studies, or innovative artistic approaches that reflect the transformative role of cinema in collective memory and healing. Presentations should be in English.

Overarching Theme – The Role of Archives and Cinema in Collective Healing: Preserving Memory Through Film

This conference explores the transformative role of cinema and archives in the preservation and processing of collective memory, with a focus on healing and reconciliation. Through a variety of cinematic forms—documentary, narrative, experimental, and archival films—cinema offers a unique space for reflecting on historical trauma and societal ruptures, providing pathways to healing.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • The role of archives and cultural heritage in preserving collective memory through cinema
  • Creative strategies for utilizing archival materials to narrate collective trauma
  • The power of documentary, narrative, and experimental cinema in representing and preserving collective memory
  • Cross-cultural perspectives on historical trauma and its cinematic representation
  • Cinematic techniques for processing and articulating social ruptures
  • The evolution of visual language in films addressing trauma, memory, and healing
  • Political and social influences on cinematic narratives of memory and reconciliation
  • The role of found footage in reconstructing and preserving collective memory

The Conference is part of the fifth edition of the Film O’Clock International Festival, organized by Creatrix Fama and co-financed by The Administration of the National Cultural Fund in Romania (AFCN). It is aligned with the mission of Creatrix Fama, the organizer of the Film O’Clock International Festival, which has become a significant cultural bridge between Europe and Africa. What began in 2021 with five countries is now a global festival, encompassing 11 nations and uniting diverse cultures through cinema. Film O’Clock offers a platform for simultaneous screenings, live Q&A sessions, online conferences, and masterclasses, creating a unique cross-cultural space for filmmakers and audiences alike.

The festival’s programming features countries including Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, Moldova, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece, Egypt, and South Africa, celebrating both contemporary and classical films, especially those focused on historical trauma, social change, and political oppression. By connecting such diverse cultures, the festival fosters not only a celebration of cinema but also an opportunity for global reflection on the ways in which films help us process collective memory and contribute to healing.

In partnership with UNATC, this academic conference furthers our commitment to expanding the conversation about cinema’s role in addressing trauma and healing within global and local contexts. The discourse of ideas between academics, filmmakers, and spectators from different parts of the globe is crucial to the effort of communal restoration.

We look forward to receiving your applications and to fostering a vibrant exchange of ideas on cinema’s role in collective memory and healing.
