About AX UNATC
AX UNATC is an open preprint repository intended to contribute to the development of artistic research. Following Borgdorff (2010, pp. 45–46), we conceive of artistic research as a field in which artistic practice is essential to the production of knowledge:
Characteristic of artistic research is that art practice (the works of art, the artistic actions, the creative processes) is not just the motivating factor and the subject matter of research, but that this artistic practice – the practice of creating and performing in the atelier or studio – is central to the research process itself. Methodologically speaking, the creative process forms the pathway (or part of it) through which new insights, understandings and products come into being.
The platform aims to support the preservation, mapping, and dissemination of artistic research methodologies from all branches of the arts, in synthetic preprints representative for artistic research results. While preprint publishing is an established practice in scientific fields, awareness and use of preprints in the arts and humanities is generally less common (see Ni and Waltman, 2024, pp. 752-753). AX UNATC fills a gap in existing dissemination practices by promoting the use of preprints in the artistic community and by offering a format adapted to the particular characteristics of artistic research. Expected beneficiaries are researchers, students, practitioners, professors, teachers, research policy makers and funding bodies.
AX UNATC was designed and initiated by the Research, Development and Innovation Department at The National University of Theatre and Film I.L. Caragiale (UNATC) in Bucharest, Romania.
