The Unification of the Arts

Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at 5:00 PM, as part of the Research – Art – Technology – Society Conference, Professor Steven Brown will deliver a keynote lecture titled The Unification of the Arts – presenting the first integrated cognitive account of the arts, uniting visual art, theatre, literature, dance, and music in one unifying perspective. The presentation will highlight the biological and cultural evolution of the arts collectively and as individual art forms. The talk proposes a unified notion of creativity and aesthetics in relation to the arts, examining the full gamut of processes, from production mechanisms and creativity to perception.

Steven Brown is the director of the NeuroArts Lab and an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. He received his Ph.D. in the Department of Genetics and Development at Columbia University in New York, and conducted postdoctoral research at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, and Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. His research focuses on the neural basis of the arts, including music, dance, acting, storytelling, cinema, drawing, aesthetics, and creativity. He is the author of “The Unification of the Arts” (Oxford University Press) and co-editor of “The Origins of Music” (MIT Press) and “Music and Manipulation” (Berghahn Books).
