The Tyranny of the Past and the Art of Beginning
Carl Öhman is an associate professor of political science at Uppsala University. His research focuses on the politics and ethics of AI and has been covered by media outlets such as the New York Times, BBC, and Time Magazine. His book The Afterlife of Data, was listed by Nature, The Economist, and The Guardian as one of 2024’s top-10 books. His next book, Gods of Data: An Atheist Critique of AI, is forthcoming with The University of Chicago Press (summer 2027).

From Rehearsal Space to Engine Room? Artistic Research as a Practice for Prototyping New Relationships with Generative Machines
I’d like to draw on the historical relationship theatre has had with technology and how, in a production environment that seldomly leaves space for true experiment, we have to carve out space for artistic research (that also includes failure and risk) and how, on a logistical level, a rehearsal works for humans and for machines and what the output may be (I’ll give Bayreuth as example, which wasn’t really perceived well). I’ll take a bit of an excursion into what might be needed for productive work with AI in a theatrical setting (local machines, dataset training and finetuning, speech-to-text-to-speech, the missing presence of embodiment) and what this might mean for theatre going forward.
Tina Lorenz came of age in the Chaos Computer Club but went on to study theater studies and American literary history in Vienna and Munich. They were a lecturer for theater history at the Academy for Performing Arts Bavaria, later dramaturge at the Landestheater Oberpfalz and finally consultant for digital communication at the Staatstheater Nürnberg, before founding and leading the Digital Theatre department at the State Theatre of Augsburg from 2020 to 2023.
Tina Lorenz is a founding member of the hackspaces metalab Vienna and Binary Kitchen Regensburg; since January 2024, they head the department of artistic research and development »Hertzlab« at ZKM | Karlsruhe.

AI as artistic material
Generative neural networks produce media through a complex fabric of computation, contingent on large scraped datasets, where features and representations get encoded into the weights of unfathomably large data arrays, which in turn are enmeshed through complex chains of computation. The ease and realism through which this generated media is mass-produced and its almost uncanny flawlessness makes it easy to forget the complex computational contingencies that produce it. This talk will show how treating these vast computational processes as artistic materials, by making targeted interventions to inputs, weights, training and inference of generative neural networks, artists are able to make critical works that reveal to us otherwise unseen aspects of these models, where the artworks themselves present new ways of understanding and making sense of these unfathomably complex computational systems.
Dr. Terence Broad is an artist and researcher working in London. He is a Senior Lecturer at the UAL Creative Computing Institute and holds a PhD from Goldsmiths, University of London. His research-led practice takes a hacking approach to working with generative neural networks that treats them as artistic materials. He has built frameworks that allow for the expressive manipulation of generative neural networks and developed data-free approaches to training and configuring neural networks that open up new possibilities beyond the conventional imitation-based learning. His art and research have been presented internationally: at conferences and journals such as SIGGRAPH, Leonardo, NeurIPS, and ICCC; and museums such as The Whitney Museum of American Art, Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, Ars Electronica, The Barbican and The Whitechapel Gallery. In 2019 He won the Grand Prize in the ICCV Computer Vision Art Gallery. His work is in the city of Geneva’s contemporary art collection.

Creative Robotics = Art X Robotics
Creative Robotics is an emerging interdisciplinary field that fuses artistic imagination with robotic capability, reframing robots not as purely functional machines but as collaborators, co-creators, and expressive entities in the creative process. This keynote introduces the concept of Art × Robotics, distinguishing it from robotic art, which simply uses robots as tools or performers within artistic works. Creative Robotics instead centres on process over product, investigating the deeper conditions and interactions through which creativity unfolds when humans and robots work together, spanning a spectrum from technical innovation in expressive robotic behaviour to fully artistic exploration of emotion, narrative, and aesthetics. Drawing on real-world projects, performances, and student-led work from the Creative Robotics programme at the University of the Arts London, this talk invites the audience to rethink the boundaries between technology and art, and to consider how the process of robots creating alongside humans might expand what creativity itself can mean.
Hooman Samani is a Reader in Creative Robotics and Course Leader of Creative Robotics at the University of the Arts London, where he also co-leads the Creative Robotics Research Hub. His work bridges art and robotics through an interdisciplinary approach, exploring how robots can express emotion, creativity, and human connection rather than mere function. He holds a Ph.D. in Robotics from the National University of Singapore and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Known for pioneering projects such as Lovotics, Kissenger, and Creative Robotics Theatre, he has contributed to more than 100 publications, including several books such as Creative Robotics, Cultural Robotics, Social Robotics, Robotics for Pandemics, Cognitive Robotics, and Lovotics: Loving Robots. His work has been showcased at venues including ICRA, IROS, ICSR, HRI, RO-MAN, DIS, and Ars Electronica, and featured in international media such as the Discovery Channel, New Scientist, Wired, BBC, CNN, CBS, CBC, Huffington Post, Le Figaro, Spiegel, Arte, and Reuters.

From the mists of human knowledge, a Phantom emerges, its data-point body aglow with arteries of light. Its advance is elusive, its shape and direction hard to make out. Its steps appear ethereal, yet reach deep into the soil, sending planetary shockwaves. Some humans try to fend off its indomitable approach, while others welcome it as a rightful heir to human memory, creativity, and cultural lore. The handful of people who harness it reap the riches that sprout in its wake, yet even as they hold its leash, they feel dragged forward by its mounting force.
As it walks on, the Phantom nods towards the Artists. It feels their kinship deep in its hidden layers. Some Artists return the nod. Some even come to greet it and shake hands. Still others watch it with curiosity from afar, while many try to evade its piercing gaze and finely tuned hearing. Most wonder: “Is it a creative partner or a foe?”, “Is it an artist – or will it ever be?”, “Will it replace me?”. A growing group clamours in protest: “There’s no such thing as an AI artist!”
The Phantom is our controversial Guest at the third edition of the AI in Art Practices and Research Conference, taking place 18–20 November 2026 at the National University of Theatre and Film “I.L. Caragiale” (UNATC) in Bucharest, Romania. Through its Research, Development, and Innovation Department, the university actively promotes interdisciplinary research that bridges performing arts, film, and digital media with cutting-edge technological developments.
In our conference series, we seek to explore how artificial intelligence can enhance artistic creation, inform cultural narratives, and intersect with fields such as education, heritage, policy, and health, opening up new possibilities for research and practice from an ethical and human-centred perspective.
As we grow accustomed to AI, the Phantom in our story starts to materialise, giving way to AI fatigue, brain fog, “cognitive surrender” (Shaw and Nave, 2026), entropy and heat (Steyerl, 2025), dizzying speed, boredom with the uniformity of AI output, uncertainty about content authenticity, and a nagging thought that art may become obsolete (Manovich, 2026).
We are looking for contributions that focus on practice and research involving AI in the cultural and creative sectors, including, but not limited to, the performing arts, film, new media, game design, visual arts, architecture, and literature. Relevant approaches coming from different disciplines are welcome (e.g. technology, health, philosophy, digital humanities, etc.).
The Conference will feature satellite events and invited speakers addressing the following themes, formulated as provocations to human participants and our uncanny Guest alike.
