Performance and the Environment

Performance and the Environment

International Conference | 14-16 May 2024 | Romania, Singapore, Philippines

Performance and the Environment is an international conference jointly hosted by LASALLE College of the Arts, University of the Arts Singapore, The National University of Theatre and Film I.L Caragiale (Romania), and The University of the Philippines Diliman.

The call for papers is currently open. Find out more about the conference themes and submission guidelines HERE.

Conference Theme

The performing arts have long served as platforms for responding to, reflecting on, and transforming our relationship with the environment. This conference invites contributions exploring how dance, theatre, music, and interdisciplinary performances can highlight ecological issues and enhance environmental awareness. We encourage discussions on the role of site-specific performances in natural spaces in heightening awareness of climate change, the influence of dance movements inspired by water’s flow and cycle on perceptions of sustainability, and the potential of storytelling and artistic interventions in public spaces to foster dialogues on water conservation and urban pollution. Scholars and practitioners are invited to share their research and creative projects that critically and creatively examine the intersection of performance and environmental stewardship. Additionally, we aim to expand the traditional concept of “environment” to include:

  • Sustainability and Environmental Issues: Exploring the impacts of climate change, pollution, and resource depletion on performance practices, and promoting eco-friendly initiatives within the performing arts.
  • Performance Sites and Site-Specific Considerations: Examining the influence of physical spaces on performances, including site-specific works and their environmental interactions.
  • Placemaking and Artistic Citizenship: Assessing performance’s role in creating and transforming public spaces and the contributions of artists to environmental awareness and action.
  • Community and the Environment: Investigating the links between performance, community engagement, and the impact of social and cultural factors on environmental practices.
  • Online and Digital Environments: Evaluating the effects of digital technologies on performance styles and the emergence of virtual and hybrid environments.
  • Environment as Upbringing: Considering the influence of both nature and nurture on artistic development and how environmental factors shape performance practices.
